BOOM ONE: AN INSIDER’S VIEW

Jul 9, 2024 New Release

BOOM ONE’S JOURNEY THROUGH THE EYES OF ITS PRODUCT MANAGER

Sound Designer Lukas Weis has led the BOOM ONE project since its inception, showing dedication and precision. Beyond carefully selecting sounds to ensure top quality updates, Lukas plays a key role in coordinating and leading the team. His responsibilities include overseeing creative decisions and turning user feedback into actionable tasks for our recording team.

Looking back, what were the main reasons for creating BOOM ONE?

Our main goal was to create a sound library that wasn’t just extensive but also extremely versatile and user-focused. We envisioned a dynamic resource capable of meeting the demands of various projects while maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Thinking about the journey, what were some of your most memorable recording experiences?

Winter Sports: The idea for this project came from our recordist Fabian, who was perfect for the topic due to his love of skiing. He spent several days in the Austrian Alps, capturing the authentic sounds of winter sports. One of the highlights was recording early in the morning, before the slopes became crowded. He even managed to ride along with a snow groomer at night, capturing the rumbling roar of the machine as it ascended the slopes. It was a perfect blend of passion for sound and love for winter sports.

“One of the challenges was recording close up actions while skiing down the slopes.”

To ensure mobility without compromising sound quality during the field recordings, we opted for compact equipment. That included a Sound Devices MixPre 6 II and DPA 4061 and DPA 4062 microphones. For static recordings, an MS setup consisting of a Shoeps MK8 figure-of-eight and a Sennheiser MKH 8040 cardioid microphone proved effective and accurate.

One of the challenges was recording close up actions while skiing down the slopes. Due to the wind and strong movements, Fabi experimented extensively with choosing the right microphones, positioning, and post-processing to get realistic and clean sounds. The experimentation and effort definitely paid off. The recordings turned out great!

Seals and animals in general: The Seal update was incredibly exciting to work on. Our team had the unique opportunity to get very close to some of nature’s most powerful creatures, like the cape fur seals.

“We recorded everything from their deep barks to their mournful cries, capturing incredible detail”

We recorded everything from their deep barks to their mournful cries, capturing incredible detail. It’s great to have the opportunity of using microphones capable of capturing high frequencies at a sample rate of 192kHz. For instance, we used the Sanken CO-100K for recording the brown bears.

Clocks: The clocks update was a passion project for one of our recordists. There’s something captivating about the ticking and chiming of clocks, each with its own unique character. He meticulously recorded everything from antique grandfather clocks to modern alarm clocks, capturing their subtle ticks and resonant chimes in a controlled studio environment. The mechanical aspects were equally fascinating. It’s a perfect example of how even everyday sounds can become magical through sound. The isolated environment in our recording studio was perfect for capturing such delicate and very quiet sounds.

Military Aircraft: The military aircraft update was one of our most intense and rewarding projects. Two of our recordists ventured up a mountainside to capture the sounds of jets and helicopters during training exercises. Being just 50 meters away from jets like the F/A-18 Hornet as they performed maneuvers was absolutely thrilling.

“For super directional recordings we used a parabolic reflector with a Sennheiser MKH 8050”

We used various microphones to capture the thundering engines and the spatial dynamics of the aircraft as they flew through the valley. For super directional recordings we used a parabolic reflector with a Sennheiser MKH 8050 but also brought a setup to record ambiX files. It was an adrenaline-pumping adventure that resulted in some of the most powerful and immersive recordings in our library.

Fire: Recording fire was an adventure in itself. We experimented with different materials to see how they burned, which led to some unexpected and unique sounds. We had to be very cautious with our setup to ensure safety while positioning the microphones as close to the flames as possible. One highlight was working with a firebreather who performed various fire tricks for us. The sounds of fire whooshing and crackling were captured beautifully, resulting in incredibly dynamic and vivid recordings.

More Sounds Than Files - How's That?

Improved workflow

We differentiate between sound FX and sound file. Each sound file can contain multiple variations of a sound (up to 6 variations based on the product).
That way, we assure to provide you with different styles of a single sound in one file instead of multiple files, keeping your database nice and clear and speeding up your workflow as you have multiple variations available by dragging only one file to your audio host software.

One File, Multiple Variations

Less repetitive sound design

Having multiple variations of a single sound effect also guarantees you a less repetitive overall soundscape when using the effect multiple times in a row or over and over again in several projects.
