From taking the bus to riding the ski lifts
Looking for audio that perfectly captures the adrenaline rush of winter sports or the rhythmic pulse of transportation? With our latest BOOM ONE update, we’ve included a carefully curated collection of sound effects for frosty pistes, bustling train stations, and everything else needed to get a story from the city to the slopes.
From the crisp crunch of snow under skis to trains whooshing past, and much, much, more. This update will transport audiences to worlds of winter and travel. Whether you’re a filmmaker seeking authentic audio for your travel documentary or a game developer aiming to immerse players in a snowy wonderland, this comprehensive collection has you covered.
WHAT’S INSIDE?
Here we bring you 147 ski sound files, including ski swooshes, boot foleys, lifts, and gondolas, and the growling sound of a giant snow groomer. Additionally, there are 73 transportation and traffic ambiences, featuring heavy traffic, metro and train stations, and on-ride train recordings. Finally, the package is rounded out by 392 additional miscellaneous files, including nature ambiences recorded with ORTF 3D, water movement files from Ireland, ceramic handling sounds, footsteps on glass shards, and a variety of drum rolls and cymbal hits.
We caught up with our recordist Fabian Knobloch to chat about his experiences doing the recordings for the ski slopes.
CAPTURING THE THRILL OF WINTER SPORTS
With a passion for all things audio and a love for skiing, Fabian embarked on an exciting journey to the snow-capped peaks of the Austrian Alps. Settled in a charming ski cabin high up in the mountains, he was well-prepared with his recording equipment. His goal was to capture the authentic sounds of winter sports for BOOM ONE, with the aim of creating a captivating, high-quality sound package for audio professionals.
Waking with the sun
“It was a big advantage to already be on the top of the mountain when the sun rises,” Fabian told us. “I took the opportunity to get out on the slopes before the crowds and enjoyed the peace and quiet of early morning recording, free from any interference from other skiers. The lifts and gondolas can get so crowded throughout the day that you have no chance of getting a clean shot other than by being the first skier on the mountain.”
To ensure mobility without compromising sound quality, Fabian opted for compact equipment. That included a Sound Devices MixPre 6 II and DPA 4061 and DPA 4062 microphones. This minimalist approach allowed him to seamlessly record ski sounds on the go, even in the confined space of a ski lift. For static recordings, an MS setup consisting of a Shoeps MK8 figure-of-eight and a Sennheiser MKH 8040 cardioid microphone proved effective and accurate.
A snow groomer’s roar
The highlight of Fabian’s journey was capturing the sound of a snow groomer during the night. “I was impressed by the sheer size of these machines and really wanted to capture the sound of it,” he recalls. “I managed to persuade one of the snow groomer drivers to let me ride along and wire his vehicle for the recording. It was one of the most exhilarating recording excursions I’ve had in a vehicle, ascending a ski slope at night while enveloped in the thunderous roar of the machine.”
