BANG INTO THE NEW SOUNDS
The update includes 373 zany cartoon sound files, 62 meditative gong strike files, and 184 other sound files sourced from other percussion, plastic building blocks, and frog croaks.
Cartoon sounds
Cartoon sounds are always in demand. They’re versatile sounds that can be used for a broad range of projects. Not just animations, but video games, user interfaces, podcasts, whacky interludes in films, and so much more.
This update brings up the BOOM ONE silly sound count by 373. It’s sure to add a lot of value for those who need to inject some humor and whimsy into their projects and need some inspiration to get going. Since this update contains quite a lot of crazy effects, we’ll just list them out here:
- Metal impacts
- Cartoony flute and clarinet phrases
- Kazoo
- Harmonica
- Plucks
- Squeaks
- Female Cartoon Vox Set
- Male Cartoon Vox Set
- Funny Monster Cartoon Vox Set
Gongs
We’ve also recorded 62 exquisite gong sound files, divided into four categories: Earth Gong, Venus Gong, Medium Gong, and Wind Gong. Each category offers unique sounds ranging from gentle strikes to friction and scrape effects. These gongs can add a layer of depth and mystique to any audio landscape, from cinematic scores to immersive soundscapes.
Various other sounds
Rounding out the update is a collection of 184 miscellaneous files, including the enchanting Hang Drum, evocative swamp ambiances with frogs, and playful sounds from plastic building blocks. This diverse selection allows sound designers to explore new textures and enhance their projects with authentic, high-quality sounds.
MAKING CARTOON SOUNDS
Our sound designer Fabio Coressel worked on some of the sounds for the cartoon portion of this update. He’s worked on previous BOOM ONE updates, and recently on the WWII FIREARMS library and the STRATA LIBRARY and is currently working on an “enchanting” new project.
Fabio tries to let the material and his vision for the product dictate much of his approach to both the update’s sound design and the trade in general. “I always feel like as a sound designer there is not always a need to KNOW beforehand how to achieve a certain sound and to rationally explain what steps you must take to get to a certain result but rather have a vision in mind and work towards that goal with your material and your skills and the most important thing – NEVER forget to actually listen to what you’re doing!”
Balancing between realism and make believe
Naturally, the most significant problem with cartoon sound effects is their excessive emphasis on humorous tones over more realistic ones. So, that always raises the question, where do you draw the line? When does silly become too silly?
“Cartoon sounds must sound more funny than realistic,” Fabio says. “This is pretty much the exact opposite of what we usually do at BOOM Library, when we try to design weapons, cars and even magic sounds to a certain degree of realism. To strike a balance between realism and cartoony for me, it was very important to always have a use case in mind for every sound I recorded and designed.”
Experimenting with sound
Experimentation with sound always comes hand-in-hand with a sound designer’s job. One trick for Fabio was to try to imitate sounds via unexpected means: “I like to try to create something that resembles one kind of sound from a very different object,” Fabio says. “It can be very interesting to really test daily objects and try to handle them in a very interesting and weird way to get amazing sounds out of them.”
And Fabio would even use his voice in the same way: “For me it was very fun to really experiment with my one voice and find interesting new sounds that I did not know I could do before.
“Everything that has some tonal aspect to it always works great. For example, it’s always interesting to experiment with different metal sheets, plastic pipes, whistles and just daily household objects like wet glasses, wine glasses, springs and so on.”
